Does your garden have hard-packed soil? Is it flat? Does rain flood from your garden onto the sidewalk, carrying away topsoil into a drain? If so, create a BIOSWALE!

At PS 12, a 3-foot deep, 30-foot bioswale collects rainwater. Large, smooth river rocks cover a rubber liner that allows unabsorbed water to flow into an underground 200-gallon collection system.

On the surface, the bioswale looks like a riverbed and invites exploration. Underground, it’s busy doing the important work of collecting rainwater. With a simple hand-pump, gardeners can access conserved water. Sustainability!
