Learning Gardens

Through one of the most exceptional community-driven grants, the Greening Western Queens Fund administered by the North Star Fund, The Horticultural Society of New York in partnership with Garden Works, Inc., created ten inspirational learning gardens. Each garden combines unique elements of educational garden design and innovative green infrastructure, activating 11,500 square feet of green space as outdoor learning laboratories in western Queens public schools.

The gardens reduce water run-off. Rainwater is collected through bioswales, permeable surfaces, and structural soils, and is held in cisterns for use by elementary, middle and high school students for watering. Custom design elements include reclaimed seating, micro-farming, and a bird sanctuary described in detail below. Click on each icon for more information.
